Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS SPIRITUAL DIRECTION?

Spiritual direction is the process of becoming more aware of our connection to the good, the true, and the beautiful, as we learn to savor the goodness in our lives, and sort out difficult life situations and choices through discernment alongside a trained Spiritual Director in a non-judgmental and fully affirming environment.

WHO IS SPIRITUAL DIRECTION FOR?

Spiritual Direction is for anyone and everyone looking to explore and reflect more deeply on their spiritual path, grow in their awareness of the divine, or seek discernment through life’s many transitions alongside a trained Spiritual Director.

IS SPIRITUAL DIRECTION LIKE THERAPY OR COUNSELING?

Spiritual Directors are generally not trained in psychotherapy or counseling so we do not diagnose or attempt to “fix” anyone’s problems. The role of the Spiritual Director is to focus on God, spirituality, and life discernment. Even though there is some overlap in methodologies and setting, Spiritual Direction is not a substitute for therapy or counseling.

WHAT KIND OF TRAINING HAVE YOU RECEIVED?

Apart from formal training in the specific ministry of Spiritual Direction, as an apprentice at the Phoenix Center for Spiritual Direction in Phoenix, AZ, I bring with me over a decade of pastoral experience and training into my spiritual direction practice.

WHAT IF I AM NOT A CHRISTIAN? OR EVEN RELIGIOUS?

There are no particular faith requirements for those who are seeking to enter into Spiritual Direction. Directees may be Christian, Muslim, Agnostic, Atheist, and so on. It is not my job to make disciples of my own tradition but rather accompany you on your own journey of becoming.
